Hurricane Katrina Hates Libertarians

One of the largest natural disasters ever to hit the continental United States is being blamed as the result of libertarian policies. The move to minimize the government and cut taxes to individuals has kept the government from successfully managing a situation such as Hurricane Katrina. Apparantly, Libertarians caused the most damage of this disaster.

What?

Blaming the effects of Katrina on libertarians is perhaps one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a long time. People who need the government to tell them that its a good idea to prepare for a natural disaster probably should not be living in coastal cities. And I say this as someone who lived in coastal cities for over 10 years. “Yes, yes! Bigger government is the solution! Feed me and wipe my butt, I’m lazy!”

The truth is, when people rely on our Presidents and Governors to tell us what to do, we have ceased to be citizens of this country and are now merely puppets to the beuracracy of others. Libertarianism isn’t what caused the failures of FEMA and the Dept. of Homeland Security. Tax cuts didn’t keep the school buses in the parking lots. In fact, one of the tenants of the LP is even to promote America’s heritage of freedom through “individual liberty and personal responsibility.” The results of this disaster aren’t a case against libertarianism, they are actually a strong statement in favor.

To prove my point, the massive outpouring of public support in the form of donations and humanitarian aid should show that libertarianism does work. We don’t need the government’s handouts, we can and will do the job ourselves. When the government fails us, the people will respond. Nowhere in my constitution do I see the words “I am entitled to free money from the government.” But it is the will of the people to maintain the well-being of their fellow man.

Don’t look to your government. Look to your neighbor.

And your neighbor was probably packing up his car and getting the fuck out of New Orleans.

Fantastic

Well I’ve got many things that I would enjoy writing about, but I don’t think that the world needs to know. So I’ll probably just spend the next few weeks seeking the advice of those I can confide in, and making my decisions from there.

I do have two interviews scheduled for next week with big companies. Wish luck.

Aimfight

So, there is this website called aimfight where you battle against other AIM users to see who is more connected to other currently online users. The more people who have you on their buddy list, the more points you get. I actually have no idea how they calculate these numbers, but its something to do when you’re bored.

AIMfight!

I don’t know what my “rank” means, but I’m guessing the first number is the number of people I’m connected to. I don’t actually know that many people, so I have no idea how I score that high.

Intramural Football

Its IM football season again, and we’re fired up. First game was tonight, and we expected a slaughter. We pulled it all together, though, and came out with guns blazing. We ended up losing on the final drive, 9-12. Not bad for the first game of the season, which we predicted to be our most difficult game. We’ll see them again in the playoffs.

I had some great receptions, and didn’t drop a single pass intended for me. Marcum threw great passes, especially the long passes deep. Thank God for football season, its back and we’re ready to play!

Back in the day…

My sophomore year of college, I remember contemplating dropping out of Rose-Hulman. It was early enough in my college career that I could have transferred to a school in Oklahoma, taken the second semester of sophomore year there, and then finished out my degree. Rose-Hulman is a very rigorous school, one that puts us through the trials of hardship on our way to that delicate piece of paper saying “You did it!”.

I’m glad that I decided to stay. I had good reasons for wanting to go, but I decided to stay, and it ended up turning out great. In the spring of my sophomore year, everything started to change. I became a much better person, I began to realize the value of friends, friends who care. Those friends that I made towards the end of sophomore year are still here. I’ve had this journal almost as long as I’ve had those friends, and going back through the months you can really see the impact it has had on me.

I know I’ve said all this before, but my life is going through changes again. Since September 1st of 2004, I have tried as hard as possible to spend as little amount of time in Oklahoma as possible. In over a year, I have only spent 4 nights there (three over christmas break). Maybe its time to go back, see some of the people there. I think I can do that now. Some people have asked me why I haven’t been back at all. Some people probably don’t care to see me at all. But its a big state, I don’t have to see them if they don’t want me to.

Blacklight Marker Party

Last night was the Marker Party at Redlight. A few of the gems from my shirt:

  • “Huge Cock”
  • “I wish I had a” (added to previous)
  • “wants one” (with an arrow pointing to “huge cock”
  • “Too late to de-virginize this shirt”
  • “Booty Monster”
  • “The Fridgenator”
  • “Quiero dormir con ti on the floor! next to the refrigerator”
  • “I <3 cars (and women)”
  • “Monhaut you’re done!”
  • A sketch of Joe’s hand, with “Joe’s Bitch” written inside
  • And some other stuff that is barely intelligible. Lot of fun at the party, even though it was extremely hot.

My blog

I feel like I’ve neglected this recently.

The whole world is upside-down and backward. Left is right and black is white. The first post I made in this new blog, over a year and a half ago:

My life is going through some changes. I need to re-evaluate who I am and who I thought I was, and how that is going to impact the next 10 years of my life. I’m going to be 21 in a little over a month… incredible. 21 years, where did they go?..

…hindsight is 20/20. I gotta make the best out of what life has given me.

I am now a few months over 22, and I still don’t know where my life is going. But I do know that soon I’ll be a graduate, working somewhere (anywhere), and continuing to sort out my life.
